With established sketch comedy festivals and burgeoning local sketch scenes in our country’s largest cities, sketch comedy is alive in well in Canada. We askedartists from across the country: What are we doin’? An analysis of the direction of the Canadian sketch scene. Is all of this just for the good times or are we making bigger plans? Is there a sketch comedy “industry” to speak for? What can we do to support our communities and to help create opportunities for each other here and internationally.

Moderator: Sasha Manoli

Sasha has been developing and producing shows since 2010 with shows featured in Festivals such as JFL42, Montreal Fringe and Zoofest. She has worked in programming and digital strategy for organizations such as Just for Laughs, Phi Centre, Montreal Sketchfest and 202 Comedy Festival. Sasha founded The Brunch Club in 2015 as a means to work with homegrown and international talent to help nurture and grow Canadian comedy culture.

Mark Little

Mark Little is one of the founders of the sketch comedy group Picnicface. He stars in the CBC sitcom Mr. D, was named one of Variety’s 10 Comics To Watch for 2013, and made his American television debut on Conan last year. In 2012, Mark co-wrote and starred in the feature film Rollertown which won the Canadian Comedy Award for Best Film. An experienced improviser, sketch and standup performer, Mark has won a combined 15 Canadian Comedy Awards and his series Space Riders: Division Earth recently won the first ever Canadian Screen Award for Best Web Series. Mark’s voice will be heard in the upcoming animated series Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs.

Allison Hogg (Toronto)

Allison Hogg is an Actor, Writer and Comedian. She is a founding member of the sketch duo Ladystache, who were winners of the first ever SiriusXM sketch off and nominated for two Canadian Comedy Awards for Best Sketch Troupe. She currently performs weekly in Sunday Night Live with iconic Toronto sketch troupe The Sketchersons. Allison is also a member of The Flirty Boys who have recently won the Now Magazine Audience Choice Award at The Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. She has performed in a number of festivals including: JFL 42 Edinburg Fringe Festival, L.A Comedy Fest, NXNE, Chicago Women’s Funny Festival, Montreal Sketchfest, Del Close Marathon at the USB, Dirty South Improv Fest, Toronto International Improv Festival and Toronto Sketchfest. Allison attended Humber College’s Comedy Writing and Performance Program. She currently lives in Toronto, behind an art gallery, pretending to be cooler than she actually is.

Daniel Carin (Montreal)

Daniel Carin does stand up comedy in Montreal and has appeared in ZOOFEST multiple weekends at the Comedy Works and Comedy Nest and is the co-host/co-creator of The Ladies & Gentlemen Comedy Show, voted #2 Comedy Show in Montreal by CultMTL. He also does sketch comedy with comedian/spiritual guide Chris Sandiford. Together, they have performed at the Vancouver Sketch Fest, the Toronto Sketch Fest and multiple shows at the Montreal Sketch Fest, where they won the Best Local Troupe award in 2014 and appeared in the Best Of The Fest show in 2015.

Chris Sandiford (Montreal)

Chris Sandiford is a comedian and actor from the future. He is one half of the sketch comedy duo “Ladies & Gentlemen” and co-hosts a similarly-named weekly stand-up show in Montreal where all his best friends are regular acts. Agnostic. Bernie [Sanders] Booster.

Amy Goodmurphy (Vancouver)

Amy Goodmurphy is a Vancouver based comedic actress and one half of the sketch comedy duo ‘The Ryan & Amy Show’. She has made several television appearances, is a comedy award winner and has over 5 million views on her online comedic short films.

Ryan Steele (Vancouver)

Ryan Steele is a Vancouver based sketch comedian and filmmaker. He is part of the sketch comedy duo The Ryan and Amy Show. 100+ short films on YouTube with over 5 million views.  Is a comedy award recipient and has performed across North America.

The Annoyance has created over 250 shows, through improvisation, over the last 27-years. If talking ideas to death in a writer’s room makes you want to kill yourself, then come learn the accelerated method we use to create content. From writing to improvisation, this class is an output factory of material. We will twist and turn your mind and psyche into creating a mountain of material. Cranking Sketch Comedy will use create through improv, then re-improvise to script, and take from the best, pitch ideas, resist talking yourself out of your scene, and end this class with original sketch material in your hand.

About The Annoyance:
Established in 1987, The Annoyance has created over 250 shows, comprised of improvisation, sketch, full-length plays, cabaret, and full-length musicals. Many Annoyance alumni can be seen today on stage, in films, and on television both in front of and behind the camera such as Jane Lynch (Glee), Andy Richter (Late Night with Conan O’Brien), Matt Walsh (Veep), Kate Flannery (The Office), Conner O’Malley (Late Night with Seth Meyers), Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer (current SNL cast), and Jill & Faith Soloway (Transparent). The Annoyance NY show schedule features comedy created by The Annoyance’s Chicago alumni, NY graduates of its NY training program, and guest performers.
The Annoyance’s training is guided by its Artistic Director, Mick Napier, and based on the approach found in his books “Improvise: Scene from the Inside Out” and “Behind The Scenes: Long Form Improvisation.” Their classes are known for providing specific, individualized feedback and helping students to develop and maintain a strong individual voice in their improvisation. Over 1000 unique students have taken a class at The Annoyance NY since the program began in October, 2013.“No matter how impossibly expensive New York becomes, young artists will always find a way to do ludicrous things in ridiculous dives, like at The Annoyance.”

WORKSHOP_IMAGESunday, May 8th – “Kickass Commitment: An Annoyance Improv Workshop”

1PM – 4PM This workshop will give up to 18 improvisers a foundation in Annoyance’s specific philosophy of strong initiation with commitment to characters and choices, withholding judgment, and play with abandonment. The workshop will move quickly and challenge participants with personal and specific feedback to think on their feet and find their own voice, And have a kick-ass time doing so.
